Canine Hydrotherapy: what is it?

Hydrotherapy is a healthy, safe and effective form of treatment and exercise for dogs. The name derives from ancient Greek and simply means “water healing.”

The benefits of hydrotherapy have been known since ancient times; the buoyancy of water allows muscles to be exercised whilst reducing the strain on the joints and limbs, and the warm water promotes blood flow, aids relaxation and well-being. The pool is heated to between 28c – 31c.

Now hydrotherapy is being recognised as being beneficial for many dogs and is a treatment that is often referred by veterinarians to improve both physical and mental health. Owners can also request their dog to go for hydrotherapy as it is also beneficial for leisure, fitness, older and energetic dogs.

Hydrotherapy can help to treat orthopaedic & neurological conditions, muscle, ligament and other soft tissue injuries. It can also help with general fitness & weight loss. Lameness from such conditions can result in severe wastage of the muscle as the body barely uses the limb or limbs.

Swimming is an ideal form of exercise for rebuilding the muscles, regaining strength, building stamina, and reducing weight both prior to operation, post operation, or due to injury, illness or ageing dogs that are less mobile on land.

Walking on land is often painful and strenuous for the dog whilst suffering from a condition, and so the non-weight bearing exercise in warm water is ideal to gradually rebuild the muscle and reduce pain & stiffness in the joints and limbs. Dogs are able to move more freely and supported by the water.

Just come for some fun!

What happens in a typical canine hydrotherapy session?

You and your dog will be welcomed into the centre and at your first session you and your dog will be given time to get used to the surroundings (have a sniff around). We will check your dog’s veterinary referral form and will talk to you about your concerns, questions and goals for hydrotherapy. We will then give your dog a health check before being fitted with a buoyancy aid or harness.

Your dog will be encouraged into the pool to swim for short sets with rest periods on the ramp. We will always be in the pool with your dog. Following the session your dog will be rinsed with fresh warm water and you will be able to dry your dog using towels and dryer if your dog is comfortable with it. All findings from the session will be explained to you along with post swim advice.
